Two mandolins can share the same tuning, the same body shape, and the same price, and still feel completely different the moment you fret a chord. Often the reason is a pair of measurements almost nobody thinks to check before buying: nut width and string spacing. They are small numbers, measured in fractions of an inch, but they decide how the strings sit under your fingers, and that shapes comfort more than almost anything else about a mandolin size.

First, a Quick Word on Courses
Before the measurements make sense, one feature of the mandolin has to be clear, because it changes how spacing works. A mandolin has eight strings, but they are grouped into four pairs called courses, and each pair is tuned to the same pitch and fretted together as a single unit. So when we talk about string spacing, there are really two spacings in play: the distance between the two strings inside a course, and the distance between one course and the next.
That doubled layout is what makes spacing on a mandolin trickier than on a guitar. Instead of fitting a fingertip behind a single string, you are pressing down two strings at once in each course, cleanly, without catching the neighboring pair. The measurements below are what determine how easy or fiddly that is.
What Nut Width Is
The nut is the small slotted strip at the top of the neck, where the strings cross before they run down the fingerboard. It holds each string at the correct height and spacing as they leave the headstock. Nut width is simply the measurement straight across that strip, from the edge of the lowest course to the edge of the highest.
On a mandolin, nut width usually lands in a narrow band, often somewhere between about 1 and 1/8 inches and 1 and 3/16 inches. That range sounds tiny, and the difference between the two ends is only a sixteenth of an inch, but on an instrument this small, a sixteenth of an inch is a lot. It changes how much room the four courses have to spread out across the neck, which changes how the whole fretboard feels.
A wider nut spreads the courses farther apart. A narrower nut packs them closer together. Neither is correct in the abstract. What matters is how that spread matches your hands and the way you play.
How String Spacing Changes the Feel
String spacing is where nut width turns into something you actually feel. Wider spacing, the kind you get from a wider nut, gives each course more room, so there is more space between your fingertip and the neighboring pair. That makes it easier to fret cleanly without accidentally muting or catching an adjacent course, which players with larger hands or thicker fingertips tend to appreciate. It also helps for picking styles where you want clear access to individual courses.
Narrower spacing packs the courses closer together, which shortens the reach across the neck. Players coming from a fiddle background often feel at home here, since violin-family string spacing is already compact, and smaller hands can find a narrow nut easier to wrap around. The tradeoff is precision. With less room between courses, it takes a slightly more accurate fingertip to fret one pair without brushing the next.
This is why the same chord shape can feel effortless on one mandolin and cramped on another. The notes are identical. The room your fingers have to find them is not.
Nut Width and Body Style Often Travel Together
Here is a detail that catches buyers off guard: nut width can vary between mandolin body styles from the same maker. The two most common shapes, the A-style with its clean teardrop body and the F-style with its carved scroll and points, are sometimes built to slightly different neck specs, so the body style you choose can quietly come with a spacing decision attached.

Scale length is the vibrating length of the strings, from the nut to the bridge, and on a mandolin it is short, roughly 13 and 7/8 inches, which is a bit more than half a guitar's scale. That short scale is why the frets sit so close together, especially up the neck.
Scale length and nut width work together to define how a mandolin feels. A short scale means small gaps between frets, which players with larger hands sometimes find tight, while the nut width sets how spread out the courses are side to side. Together they explain why a mandolin can feel cramped or comfortable in a way that has nothing to do with the wood, the tuning, or the price.
