How to Diagnose and Fix Guitar Fret Buzz: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fret buzz is one of the most common complaints on any guitar, and one of the most misunderstood. It is that thin, rattly sound a string makes when it vibrates against a fret it should be clearing, instead of ringing out clean. Sometimes it is a tiny buzz you only hear unplugged. Sometimes it chokes a note out completely. Either way, it makes an otherwise good guitar feel broken.

Here is the reassuring part: fret buzz almost always comes from one of three causes, and each one has a clear fix. The trick is figuring out which cause you actually have before you start turning things, because the wrong adjustment can make a good guitar worse. Learning how to fix fret buzz starts with learning how to diagnose it.

The Three Things That Cause Fret Buzz

Almost every case of guitar fret buzz traces back to one of these:

The neck is too flat, meaning it has too little relief. Relief is the slight forward curve in the neck that gives the strings room to vibrate. Too little, and the strings clip the frets in the middle of the neck.

The action is too low. Action is the height of the strings above the frets. Set it too close, and the strings buzz even on a perfectly good neck.

The frets are high or uneven. If one or more frets sit higher than their neighbors, the string hits that tall fret and buzzes no matter how well the neck and action are set.

Nail down which of these you have, and the fix becomes obvious. Guess wrong, and you chase your tail. So diagnosis comes first.

Step One: Find Where the Buzz Lives

Grab the guitar and play every note, string by string, fret by fret, listening for exactly where the buzz shows up. Where it lives tells you what it is.

  1. Play open strings. If the open strings buzz but fretted notes are clean, the problem is usually at the nut end, a low nut slot, or a neck that is backbowed and choking the open string.
  2. Play the lower frets, roughly one through five. Buzz concentrated down here often points to too little relief, because a flat neck brings the middle frets up into the string's swing path near the bottom of the neck.
  3. Play the middle and upper frets. Buzz that spreads across many frets as you climb usually means the action is too low overall. Buzz that appears at one specific fret and nowhere else almost always means that single fret, or its neighbor, is high.

Write down what you find. Buzz in one spot behaves very differently from buzz everywhere, and that difference is your whole diagnosis.

Step Two: Check the Relief

Before adjusting anything, measure the neck's relief so you know where you stand. Capo the low E string at the first fret, hold it down at the last fret, and look at the gap between the string and the eighth fret. A feeler gauge, that fanned set of thin metal blades marked in thousandths of an inch, tells you the exact gap. Most electrics want somewhere around .008 to .012 of an inch there, about the thickness of a few sheets of paper.

If the gap is nearly zero and the guitar buzzes in the lower frets, the neck is too flat. Loosen the truss rod, the adjustable steel rod inside the neck, a quarter turn at a time to add relief, then re-check. This alone cures a huge share of buzz complaints.

If the relief already measures in the normal range, do not touch the truss rod. The problem is somewhere else, and adding relief you do not need raises your action for no reason.

Step Three: Check the Action

If relief is correct and the guitar still buzzes broadly across the neck, the strings are probably sitting too low. Look at the bridge saddles, the little pieces that set each string's height at the body end.

Raise the saddles a small amount, just enough to lift the strings clear of the frets, then play through again. Go in small steps. The goal is the lowest action that plays clean without buzzing, so you sneak up on it rather than cranking the strings sky high. A hair of saddle height often makes the buzz disappear.

Do not forget intonation after a height change. Intonation is whether the notes play in tune all the way up the neck, and moving saddle height can shift it slightly, so it is worth a quick check once the buzz is gone.

Step Four: Deal With High or Uneven Frets

If relief is right and action is right and you still get buzz at one specific spot, you have a high fret. This is mechanical, not an adjustment, so no amount of truss rod or saddle turning will fix it.

Confirm it with a fret rocker or a small straight edge laid across three frets at a time. Rock it over the suspect fret. If it teeters like a see-saw, that fret is high. The cure is a fret level, where a tech files the tops of the frets to the same plane and re-crowns them, or, in stubborn single cases, seating or replacing the one proud fret.

Fret leveling is careful work best left to someone with the right files and experience, but diagnosing it yourself means you walk into the shop knowing exactly what you need instead of paying for a guess.

Why Buzz Keeps Coming Back

Fix the buzz today, and it can still return in a few months, and that is not always your fault. Wood necks move with the weather. Wood takes on moisture when the air is humid and gives it off when it is dry, so a neck that you set perfectly in spring can lose relief and start buzzing by the dry heart of winter. That is why the same guitar seems to develop buzz every year around the same season.
