How Much Neck Relief Should an Electric Guitar Have?

If your action feels high, your strings buzz, or your guitar just stopped playing the way it used to, neck relief is usually the first thing to check. And the question almost everyone asks first is the simplest one: how much relief should there actually be?

Here is the short answer. Most electric guitars play best with a small amount of relief, somewhere in the range of .006 to .012 inch, measured as a gap at the middle of the neck. Many builders spec around .006 inch for electrics, while a lot of techs settle in closer to .010 inch in practice. There is no single magic number, because the right amount depends partly on how you play. But that range covers the large majority of electric guitars, and understanding why it works will let you dial in your own.

Here is what that number means, how to measure it, and what to do when it drifts.

What Neck Relief Actually Is

Neck relief is the slight forward curve built into a guitar neck. Sight down the neck from the headstock, and a properly set neck is not dead flat. It has a very subtle concave bow, dipping away from the strings through the middle and rising back up toward the body.

That curve is intentional, and there is a clear reason for it. When you pluck a string, it does not vibrate in a straight line. It swings in an oval arc that is widest at its center and narrows toward the two fixed ends. A neck with a touch of relief creates a shallow pocket that gives the string room to make that swing without slapping against the frets in the middle of the board. Set the relief correctly, and you get even action all the way up the neck with no buzzing anywhere.

It helps to know the two ways a neck can be wrong. A neck with too much concave bow has excessive relief. A neck bent the other way, humping up toward the strings, has a back bow. Proper relief sits just slightly to the concave side of flat.

How Much Relief Is Right, and Why It Depends on You

The .006 to .012 inch range is the answer for most players, but the sweet spot within it comes down to your touch.

If you play with a light to medium attack, you need less relief. Around .010 inch is plenty, and keeping it on the lower side lets you set a lower, faster action. If you dig in hard, strum aggressively, or use a capo a lot, your strings swing in a wider arc and need more room. Relief in the .015 to .020 inch range is normal for heavy players and helps prevent the rattle and buzz that a tight setup would produce under a strong pick attack.

This is why guitar makers publish slightly different numbers and why two excellent techs might set the same model a few thousandths apart. The goal is not to hit one exact figure. It is to land in a sensible range and then fine-tune it to your hands and your style. A few thousandths of an inch sounds like nothing, but on a guitar neck, it is the difference between effortless and buzzy, so the small numbers genuinely matter.

How to Measure Your Neck Relief

You can check relief yourself in a couple of minutes with a feeler gauge and a capo.

Tune the guitar to pitch and hold it in playing position, since the neck sits differently under tension. Clamp a capo on the low E string at the first fret. Then press that same string down at the last fret, or around where the neck meets the body. With the string held at both ends, it becomes a straight reference line running the length of the neck.

Now look at the gap between the bottom of that string and the top of the frets around the middle of the neck, roughly the sixth to eighth fret. That gap is your relief. Slide a feeler gauge in to measure it. When the gauge just slips into the gap and lightly touches the string without lifting it, you are reading your relief. If the string sits flat on the frets in the middle with no gap at all, the neck is dead straight or back-bowed and needs more relief. If the gap is large and the action feels high, you have too much.

Reading the Symptoms

Most players notice a relief problem by how the guitar feels and sounds before they ever reach for a gauge, and the symptoms point in clear directions.

Too little relief, or a neck pushed into back bow, shows up as fret buzz, usually in the lower and middle frets where the flattened or reversed curve leaves the strings no room to vibrate. The fix is to add a little relief. Too much relief shows up as high, stiff action through the center of the neck, the part of the board that has bowed furthest from the strings. It can feel like hard work to fret notes around the middle, and lowering the bridge to compensate often just trades the high action for buzz somewhere else. The fix there is to reduce relief.

One thing worth knowing: relief is the first step in a setup, not the whole thing. If you set your relief correctly and still get buzz, the next adjustment is string height at the bridge. Relief and action work together, and getting the curve right first makes everything after it easier.

Why Your Relief Keeps Changing

Here is the part that frustrates players. You set your relief perfectly, and a few months later, the guitar is buzzing, or the action has crept up again. On a wood neck, that is not a mistake you made. It is the wood doing what wood does.

Wood absorbs and releases moisture as the humidity and temperature around it change. As it does, it expands and contracts, and the relief shifts with it. Constant string tension nudges it, too, and changing string gauge changes the pull on the neck enough to require a fresh adjustment. This is why most wood-neck guitars need a truss rod tweak once or twice a year, depending on your climate and how much you travel, and why it is smart to check your relief every time you change strings.
