Fretboard radius is one of those specs that shows up on every guitar listing and confuses almost everyone who reads it. You see a number like 9.5 inches or 12 inches next to the neck description, nod along, and move on without really knowing what it means. That is a shame, because the radius has a direct effect on how a guitar feels under your hand and on which playing stylesย it suits best.
The good news is that the concept is simple once someone explains it plainly. Radius describes the curve of the fretboard, and that curve changes everything from how easily you can barre a chord to how low you can set your action before your bends start choking out. Understanding it puts a real tool in your hands, whether you are buying your next guitar or speccing a replacement neck.

What Is Fretboard Radius?
The top surface of a fretboard is not flat. It curves gently from one edge to the other, rising slightly in the middle and falling away toward the outer strings. Fretboard radius is the measurement of that curve.
The number comes from geometry. Picture the arc of the fretboard continued all the way around into a full circle. The radius of that imaginary circle, measured in inches, is your fretboard radius. A 9.5-inch radius means the fretboard curve matches a circle 9.5 inches across from center to edge. This leads to the one rule worth memorizing: the smaller the number, the more rounded the fretboard, and the larger the number, the flatter it is. A 7.25-inch board is noticeably rounder than a 12-inch board.
Two points clear up most of the confusion around the term. First, radius has nothing to do with the shape of the neck itself, the part you wrap your hand around. That is the neck profile, and it is a completely separate spec. A neck can have a chunky profile and a flat radius, or a slim profile and a rounded radius, in any combination. Second, radius is not the same as neck relief or bow. Relief is the lengthwise curve the truss rod controls. Radius is the side-to-side curve across the width of the board. They describe different curves on the same piece of wood.

How to Measure Fretboard Radius
If your guitar's spec sheet does not list the radius, you can find it yourself. The most reliable way is to use a set of radius gauges, which are small notched cards or plates each cut to a specific curve. You hold each gauge against the fretboard, usually near the nut, and look for the one whose curve sits flush against the board with no gaps and no rocking. The number on that gauge is your radius. Full sets are inexpensive and worth owning if you do any of your own setup work.
There is one wrinkle to watch for. Some fretboards do not keep the same radius along their whole length, so where you measure matters. Modern Fender moved to 9.5 inches, which is now the most popular radius in production and a genuine all-rounder. It keeps much of the comfort of a rounder board while flattening out enough to handle bends and lead work, which is why roughly two-thirds of Fender's electrics use it today.
From there the boards get flatter. PRS builds most of its guitars around 10 inches, splitting the difference between the Fender and Gibson camps. Gibson is widely associated with a 12-inch radius on the Les Paul and SG, a flatter surface that favors lead playing and smooth bends, though many of Gibson's pre-1960s electrics actually measured closer to 9.5 or 10 inches. At the flat end of the scale sit the shred machines. When 1980s players wanted raw speed and slinky bends, builders like Ibanez, Jackson, and Charvel answered with 12, 16, and even 20-inch radii, surfaces nearly flat enough to roll a marble straight across.
None of these is better than the others. They are tools matched to different jobs, and knowing where a guitar sits on this spectrum tells you a lot about how it will feel before you ever pick it up.
How Radius Affects Playability: Rounder vs. Flatter
The trade-off between rounded and flat comes down to two things you do constantly: fretting chords and bending strings.
A rounder radius matches the natural curve of your fingers when you lay them across the strings. Form a barre and your index finger arches slightly on its own. A 7.25 or 9.5 inch board meets that arch, so chords and barres press cleanly with less effort and less fatigue over a long session. The cost shows up when you bend. On a rounded board, you cannot set the action as low, because as you bend a string across the curve it climbs toward the higher frets and chokes out, the note dying mid-bend. You are essentially bending uphill into the crown of the curve.
A flatter radius flips that equation. The even surface lets you drop the action lower without the bends fretting out, which is exactly what aggressive lead playing wants. The reason is mechanical: your saddle heights are fixed, and on a flat board a bent string keeps enough clearance over the frets ahead of it instead of running into them. The downside is that heavy chord work can feel slightly less natural, since the flat surface no longer cradles the curve of your hand. This is the whole reason flat boards became the standard for shred and rounded boards stayed beloved by rhythm and blues players.
Most players land somewhere in the middle, which is why 9.5 inches became so popular. It is comfortable enough for chords and flat enough for everyday bending, a sensible default if your playing crosses styles.
Compound Radius: The Best of Both Worlds
If a rounder board is better for chords and a flatter board is better for bends, the obvious question is whether you can have both. You can, and the answer is a compound radius.
A compound radius fretboard changes its curve along its length. It starts rounder near the nut, where your open chords and barres live, then gradually flattens as it approaches the body, where your bends and high lead lines happen. You get the chord comfort of a vintage board down low and the bend-friendly flatness of a shred board up high, all on one neck.
The clearest way to picture it is to compare two shapes. Slice a straight pipe lengthwise, and the cut surface has the same curve from end to end, like a standard radius. Now slice a cone the same way, and the curve is tight at the narrow end and flattens steadily as the cone widens. A compound radius board is essentially a slice of a cone. That gentle taper also does something useful for your setup: it keeps the strings from rising too far off the board as they splay outward toward the bridge, which helps you hold a low, clean action across the whole neck. Builders pioneered the idea during the 1980s shred boom, and it has stayed popular with players who refuse to choose between rhythm comfort and lead speed.
Choosing the Right Radius and Spec'ing a Replacement Neck
Radius is a feel decision, and the right one depends on how you actually play rather than on any spec being objectively superior. If you spend your time on chords and rhythm, a rounder board in the 7.25 to 9.5 inch range will feel like home. If you live on bends and fast lead lines with low action, lean flatter toward 12 inches or beyond. If you do a bit of everything, 9.5 inches or a compound radius covers the most ground.
